Field of activity

Gilders (m/f) work independently in the craft tradition, carrying out all types of gilding, silvering and metal-plating work. They undertake framing to customer specifications and to their own designs and are also involved in colouring and designing pieces. According to the type of job order, they work either in workshops or on site directly at the customer's premises.

Occupational skills

  • Gilders produce sketches and drawings from patterns submitted or from their own designs;
  • prepare the ground, in particular wood, metal, plastic, glass, stucco and plaster;
  • prime the ground according to the gilding technique to be used;
  • carry out ornamental plaster work;create surfaces using various techniques;
  • make frames,carry out mounting work paying particular regard to design and conservation criteria;
  • gild, silver and metal-plate pieces in internal and external locations;
  • create pieces using different painting techniques;
  • produce imitations of paintings;
  • carry out maintenance and restoration work.
