Training profiles - Basic information on individual training occupations. The following are short descriptions of a selection of the hitherto training occupations. This page will be gradually extended.

Designation of occupation

Bike mechanic
Recognised by ordinance of 9 July 2008 (BGBl. I, p. 1560).

Duration of traineeship

3.5 years
The venues for training are company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule). For the continuing training of young skilled workers, courses of instruction at inter-company training centres have been agreed by the social partners. In the last one-and-a-half years, training has taken place in a choice of two specialisations:
- bicycle technology
- motorcycle technology

Field of activity

Bike mechanics are employed in workshops in the bike mechanic trade and on sales floors in the bike sales sector, in accordance with the skills and expertise they have gained in the course of basic and occupation-specific vocational training and in the area of specialisation they have pursued.

Occupational skills

Bike mechanics work independently with responsibility for the thorough completion of the tasks assigned to them. They maintain, modify or manufac-ture bikes as well as multi-wheel and special vehicles. They maintain the associated plant, components, subassemblies and systems, modify frames and equip bikes with accessories or special equipment. They service and inspect motors.
In the planning and execution of their work they take account of economic, environmental, occupational and safety-related rules and regulations. They use occupation-specific skilled techniques for their work, including testing, measuring, assembly, dismantling, joining, separating, remodelling and manual and machine processing. They plan and monitor operational procedures, make use of information and communications technologies and testing and measuring equipment, and evaluate the results.
They communicate within the company and engage in customer dialogue; they reflect on the outcomes and impacts of these dialogues with regard to opera-tional workflows, company profitability and customer satisfaction.

Bike mechanics specialising in
bicycle technology

  • advise customers and sell bikes and services,
  • transact all aspects of the sale of goods and services including accounting,
  • procure goods and display them on the sales floor,
  • service and repair bikes,
  • adapt bikes to particular customer requirements, 
  • manufacture complete bikes from individual components.

Bike mechanics specialising in
motorcycle technology

  • service, inspect and maintain motors and their subsystems, e.g. carburation systems, and electrical and electronic management, comfort and safety sys-tems. 
  • produce, modify, equip or retrofit motorised bicycles, multi-wheel bikes and special bikes,
  • analyse the condition of motorcycles and associated systems using diagnostic devices, examine bike functions in conjunction with mechanical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • adapt bikes to particular customer requirements, 
  • sell services, goods and products.
