Port boatman
Recognised by ordinance of 20 January 2006 (BGBl. I p. 206)

Duration of traineeship

3 years.
The venues for training are the company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Port boatmen work in sea and river ports in the field of passenger and freight transport with water vessels, as well as in mooring

Occupational skills

Port boatmen are responsible for

  • putting water vessels into operation and driving them
  • transporting ferry and tourist passengers
  • mooring and unmooring water vessels and hauling them
  • loading and unloading water vessels and transporting freight
  • maintaining and servicing water vessels and their equipment, as well as technical facilities
  • performing nautical tasks
  • using communication and information technologies and applying specialist terminology
  • communicating with customers and providing information in English
  • participating in logistics planning and organisation processes, and conducting quality assurance measures
  • planning their work, specifying working stages, and checking, evaluating and documenting their working results
  • conducting their work independently or within a team and observing the environmental and health protection standards, as well as work safety regulations
