Duration of traineeship

3 years
The venues for training are the company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Wood mechanics work in companies operating in the furniture, interior decoration, construction element, wooden packing material, rack, rail and frame industry. They work predominantly in workshops at machines and installations.

Occupational skills

Wood mechanics are responsible for

  • producing furniture, interior fittings, construction elements, wooden packing materials or frames 
  • processing and finishing wood, woodwork and other materials
  • setting up, operating and maintaining tools, appliances, machines and technical facilities,
  • monitoring and controlling production processes
  • processing, evaluating, preparing and documenting data
  • conducting measurements, producing templates and gauges and using these
  • treating surfaces
  • packaging and storing products
  • planning and documenting their work, recording the quantities and times required, and calculating the costs for services provided
  • applying safety measures and measures to protect health at work, as well as to protect the environment in the workplace
  • setting up, securing and clearing workplaces
  • conducting their work independently, with a focus on the customer and on efficiency, on the basis of work orders or plans, either alone or as part of a team
  • conducting quality assurance measures
