Designation of occupation

Media designer , digital and print media

Duration of traineeship

3 years
For one-third of the duration of traineeship, training is provided in one of three areas of specialisation:

  • Consultation and planning
  • Design conception and visualisation
  • Design and technology

The venues for training are the company and part-time vocational school (Berufsschule).

Field of activity

Media designers for digital and print media work in industry and the skilled trades. They are employed by marketing and communication agencies, design studios, print and media companies, media service providers, publishing houses and the marketing and communication divisions of companies and public institutions.

Occupational skills

Media designers for digital and print media specialising in consultation and planning

  • complete project plans for media products both independently and as part of a team
  • support and advise customers and produce offers
  • carry out certain project management tasks 
  • visualise and present projects
  • process project-related data

Media designers for digital and print media specialising in design conception and visualisation

  • analyse customer orders, and research the local conditions and target groups
  • use creative techniques in order to produce design concepts
  • visualise and present ideas and draft versions
  • develop drafts which are suitable for further media processing 
  • make use of quality assurance control procedures suitable for media use

Media designers for digital and print media specialising in design and technology

  • plan production sequences independently and as part of a team
  • design elements for media products
  • accept, produce, transfer and convert data for multiple utilisation
  • combine media elements, prepare them for different media and release them on different media
  • agree outputs with the customer
