Certified Event Manager

1. Field of work and areas of responsibility 

 Certified event managers are qualified to work in the event management sector either as company employees or on a self-employed basis; they independently perfom a wide range of responsible tasks related to the planning and management of event-specific matters with the help of instruments from business and personnel management. They are qualified to work in companies and institutions which are active as organizers or co-organizers of events. Their work takes into account the opening and globalization of markets as well as resulting market developments and trends. They are also qualified to fulfil responsibilities in in-house training and further training (training competence). In addition they should be able to apply their varied knowledge in the following areas: . Trade fairs and exhibitions,
. Conferences and meetings,
. Art events, cultural events and sports events, and
. Marketing events.   In particular, certified event managers can perform the following tasks independently and on their own responsibility:  

  1. Analysing and evaluating matters relating to event management from an economic, business management and legal point of view and drawing conclusions with regard to the operational steps that need to be taken, 
  2. Designing, organizing, implementing, analysing and co-organizing events following a target- and team-oriented approach,
  3. Systematically developing complex, varied and quality-oriented solutions in event management processes, and
  4. Applying their communication skills at the interface between business management and technical operations.

2. Occupational skills 

Certified event managers command knowledge, skills and experience which they have as a rule gained in the course of the pertinent vocational training and practical work. In order to perform the above-mentioned tasks, they command skills in the following areas: 

Economy-related skills:

  1. Economics and business administration 
  2. Accounting
  3. Law and taxes
  4. Management

Area-specific skills:

  1. Analysing markets and defining market prospects
  2. Designing event projects
  3. Planning, preparing, implementing and analysing events
  4. Acquisition of customers and customized marketing of events
  5. Supervision and cooperation.

3. Skills accreditation 


According to the Federal Government regulations of 25 January 2008 (Federal Law Gazette BGBl. I p. 109), a certified event manager must have demonstrated the skills listed above in section 2 in an examination administered under public law with a focus on practical application and job-related skills. A certificate is issued on passing the examination.

4. Examination requirements 

Before sitting the part of the examination on economy-related skills, candidates must have completed vocational training in the recognized occupation of event manager (Veranstaltungskaufmann/ Veranstaltungskauffrau) or they must have completed vocational training in a recognized commercial or administrative occupation followed by at least one year of work experience or they must have passed the final examination in another recognized occupation followed by at least two years of work experience in this specific area or they must furnish proof of four years of work experience in this area.

Before sitting the part of the examination on area-specific skills, candidates must have passed the above part of the examination within the preceding five years and must furnish proof of a further year of work experience in addition to the work periods specified above in all training occupations other than the recognized occupation of event manager.
Courses are offered in preparation for the examination; their duration is geared to the different functional and managerial tasks.
