The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) and UNESCO-UNEVOC invited scholars from the UNEVOC network and beyond to gather in Bonn for a two-day international workshop titled "Work-based learning as a pathway to competence-based education - Research and implementation strategies from a comparative and global VET perspective".

German dual VET system on national TV in India

The national Indian TV broadcasting system presents three German apprentices to exemplify the German dual training system. iMOVE supported and accompanied the crew from India who filmed in the Bonn region in May 2017. BIBB president Friedrich Hubert Esser and Ulrich Meinecke (iMOVE) were interviewed.

Dual education and training in Paraguay is a key political priority

There is great political support in Paraguay for the introduction of dual education and training based on the German model (MoPaDual). This is furthering the creation of the general institutional framework. BIBB and Paraguayan vocational education and training stakeholders have successfully developed foundations for MoPaDual.

Societal and technological developments are keeping vocational education and training in suspense. One issue frequently associated with this is the question of whether dual VET is still structured in a way that is in tune with the times or whether changes to the system are necessary.
In looking at issues for the future of vocational education and training in this edition of BWP, we are conscious of the fact that many topics relating to the further development of the dual system have a long tradition.

The training occupation as the basis for lifelong learning in the employment biography

Vocational education and training in German-speaking countries is traditionally aligned to the concept of the training occupation. Both the precise nature of this concept and the requirements made of it have regularly shifted in the past. The article provides an overview of this development and describes current action areas with regard to structuring the training occupation in a future-oriented way so as to serve as the starting point for a flexible employment biography.

Dual vocational education and training systems in Europe facing similar challenges - Approaches towards reform in Austria and Denmark

The aim of the European Erasmus+ Project "Apprenticeship Toolbox" was to present dual training systems in Europe. Within the scope of the project, it became clear that these systems are facing similar challenges. The article presents the challenges and approaches towards reform developed in Austria and Denmark.

Trend towards upskilling has stabilised, more young people in the transitional sector once again

Various education and training opportunities are open to young people between completion of general lower secondary school and entry into working life depending on their interests and the qualifications they have obtained. Data from the "Integrated Training Reporting System" (iABE) shows how young people are distributed across these different stages of education and training and which changes have occurred during the past twelve years.

More English, more security, more service (09/05/2017)
The two commercial training occupations in air transport - "Air traffic management assistants" and "Service employees in air traffic" - are taking off again. They now form an occupational group. Key importance will be attached in future to knowledge of English and security aspects.
Not always just a purely male domain (20/04/2017)
Despite numerous measures to increase the number of women training in technical occupations, the proportion has not in-creased in more than 20 years. However, "typically female" technical occupations definitely exist, even if it is just a few.
Qualifications for refugees lead to boom in continuing education and training (18/04/2017)
The prevailing economic mood in the continuing education and training sector peaked at its highest point to date in 2016. The results of the "wbmonitor" survey by BIBB and DIE show that organisations providing qualifications for refugees saw improvements in terms of "economic mood".
