Learning within the work process is a key form of training used in Germany's 'dual' vocational training system (which combines part-time vocational schooling with practical work experience) and is closely linked to the principle of teaching vocational competence. The reports in this issue of BWP look into how work processes can be organised so that they foster learning and skill acquisition, and examine not only organisation-related but also didactic questions in this connection. They additionally point out which forms of job-related learning can be and are being used in initial and continuing vocational training.

In this issue's editorial, BIBB's President Manfred Kremer underscores how very effective linking different forms of learning and learning venues is and advocates putting the variety of possible combinations of practical and theoretical learning to greater use for this.

Further reports in this issue deal with models for learning time accounts and older workers' confidence in their ability to undergo continuing training. In an interview, Professor Dr Thomas Bals provides insights into the programme for this year's Hochschultage Berufliche Bildung Conference on Vocational Training.
