Declining company participation in apprenticeship training: Reasons and patterns
Abstract
For several years the number of apprenticeship contracts concluded has been continuously decreasing. The causes of this are assumed to be primarily the declining numbers of school leavers due to demographic change, the increased tendency among young people to study, and the emerging difficulties of matching training place supply with training place demand. Based on data of the BIBB qualification panel this article therefore examines how falling participation in apprenticeship training - as measured by the decrease in newly concluded apprenticeship contracts - is explained from the perspective of companies.
