Advisory project in Nigeria (September 2025 - September 2026)
BIBB has recently modernized four training regulations in the field of environmental technology. With its expertise in vocational training for environmental management and circular economy, BIBB will to support the Nigerian vocational training sector.
The GIZ Nigeria program “Skills Development for Youth Employment (SKYE II)” aims to tackle two of Nigeria's most pressing challenges:
- Youth unemployment and underemployment
- Environmental degradation and natural resource management
TVET has a key role to play: on the one hand, vocational school students and job seekers lack basic knowledge and skills on the subject of sustainability. On the other hand, there is great potential for formalizing the environmental and waste management sector.
For this reason, BIBB was commissioned with the following work packages:
- Development of a modular basic course on “green skills” as a cross-cutting qualification
- Development of the National Occupational Standard “Basic Environmental Technology” in cooperation with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)
- Accompanying a study visit of Nigerian TVET stakeholders to Germany on the topic of “TVET and the circular economy”
The development of occupational standards and curricula that teach basic sustainability skills and the skills required for waste and water management can make a significant contribution to the creation of sustainable jobs.
BIBB’s activities contribute to the goal of using vocational education and training as a vehicle for promoting “green skills” and helping to formalize the waste management sector. The jointly developed products are to be used in TVET institutions throughout the country after the project has ended. BIBB is thus making a valuable contribution to the socio-ecological transformation in Nigeria.
